These images were made during a residency in Venice in the summer of 2006. They continue my experiments with Plastisol ink, which allows me to print many layers and to build up the thickness of the ink. The marks then sit quite proud on the page.
The title of the series means hybrids, and the title of each piece is from a flavor of Italian gelato.
I am preoccupied with hair, in all its forms. The images allude to head hair and body hair, both of which are adored on the body of a loved one, while upon the body of a stranger, of someone we don't care for, hair can be repulsive and even frightening. I am interested in this edge where something very simple can transform in our minds so easily and quickly, and in either case evoke so much.
